  1. 1

    One currency, one rate

Lunevia, Tarsk and the Merovan Islands share the basin crown. Because they share a currency, they also share a single policy rate, set by the NBMU Central Bank. No member can set its own interest rate.

  2. 2

    How the rate is set

A nine-member Monetary Council votes on the rate at scheduled meetings. Its job is to bring inflation back to a 2% target. It publishes the vote and a statement explaining it.

  3. 3

    Why one rate can pinch

Member economies do not always move together. When prices are rising fast in one member and jobs are being lost in another, the same rate can look too high to some and too low to others. Split votes often reflect that.

  4. 4

    Where you feel it

The policy rate feeds through to mortgages, business loans and savings. In Lunevia, a large share of mortgages are on variable rates, so households notice quickly. The rate also affects the crown's value, and with it the price of imports.

Common questions

Why can't Tarsk just cut its own rates?

Because it shares the crown, Tarsk has handed rate-setting to the union's central bank. Its government can still use taxes and spending, within union rules.

What does a split vote mean?

It means Council members disagreed. It can signal that a change is close, but it does not commit the bank to act at the next meeting.

Why does the crown move when rates are announced?

Traders position for what they expect the bank to do. If the decision surprises them, they adjust quickly and the currency moves.
